Services

Putting the 5 laws of library science in consideration, SUN-LIB offers the following services

User registration

To serve our users (students, staff and external patrons) better, their registration is done where Users’ Bio and Academic data is captured to help us plan and also have a record of all our users. This registration enables us profile our readers, facilitates the acquisition process, etc

Charging & Discharging

The library issues out information materials (books) to all registered users irrespective of their gender, religion, political affiliation, etc. Books are charged (borrowed) for a designated period of time (5 days for students and 2 weeks for staff).  However, renewals can always be extended for upto 3 times. Reference works such as Dictionaries, Almanacs, Thesauri, Qurans, Bibles, Journals, research reports/dissertations, newspapers, etc are consulted only within the library

Current Awareness Services CAS

We live in an ever evolving world and society. Users need to keep themselves abreast with current and accurate information out there. The Library disseminates to its clients a variety of current affairs through timely provision of newspapers, reports, news about major events, among others. Additionally, through its Social Media platforms such as X (previously twitter), Whatsapp, etc, SUN-LIB, from time to time reaches out to its online audience with current information

Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI)

SUN-LIB has systems and platforms in place for responding to the unique needs of its clients. This is done through providing various sources of data and information to support clients’ research undertakings. Platforms such as eresources@sun.ac.ug and universitylibrarian@sun.ac.ug help facilitate SDI requests and activities

Interlibrary loaning

Through collaborations, user requests for not readily available articles, books, etc in the library can always be got from those institutions that SUN-LIB collaborates with. The most common example of such collaboration is the CUUL-SUNLIB arrangement, where user requests for resources not available at SUN-LIB are channeled to CUUL member institutions

Document Delivery Services:

Lecturers, Researchers and any other users can order/request for rare and pertinent articles for their research needs through the established channels such as OPAC, mails; eresources@sun.ac.ug, universitylibrarian@sun.ac.ug, X (formerly twitter), among others.

Electronic resources

SUN-LIB offers to its users a wealth of resources in electronic format. Ranging from eBooks, eJournals, Databases, Monographs, etc, these are made available to all students and researchers at the University. The resources are acquired through databases such as Ovid, IEEE, Boabab among others. SUN-LIB also collaborates with institutions such as CUUL for eResources access

Reference services

……“providing the right book to the right reader at the right time.” (S.R Ranganathan)…

Readers from time to time require personalized assistance in their quest for authentic information. To bridge this gap, SUN-LIB staff offer Reference services to users as and when required. This is always in 2 aspects: i) Information service ii) Library instruction. Librarians help users identify information sources that respond to their particular query, problem or assignment

Information literacy training

At SUN-LIB, we continuously equip our clients with skills and knowledge on how to use the Library’s resources both print and electronic. Training is offered both at individual and group levels where different categories of users such as students, staff, among others are handled at different intervals.

Research support

The Library offers research support services to its users by organizing online and physical webinars, trainings etc regarding best practices in research, use of research tools such as reference management tools, research phrase banks, report writing, etc
